What do you understand by the term "Duty" ?
Definition of Duty:
A duty is defined as a cultivable area that is capable of receiving irrigation from any source of water at a unit volume of one cubic meter per second (cumec) of discharge. Typically, it is stated in hectares per cumec. Duty is a measure of how well water is used for irrigation.
Like, during a cropping season, one cumec of water can irrigate 1000 hectares of irrigated land; in this case, the duty is 1000 hectares per cumec.
Significance:
high Duty denotes a more effective use of water since it irrigates a bigger area with a given amount of water. The duty changes according to crop, climate, soil type, and irrigation techniques.
